|description=Atlantic salmon swim bladder sarcoma virus (ASSBSV) is an epsilonretrovirus originally isolated from Salmo salar species. ASSBSV belongs to genus Epsilonretrovirus within Retroviridae family (International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses -ICTV- Fauquet et al. 2005) and according to Llorens et al. 2009 is located within Class 1 of the Retroviridae family. This retrovirus-infected salmons usually are in poor physical condition and display swollen abdomens that upon necropsy were found to contain multinodular masses of neoplastic cells occupying external and internal surfaces of the swim bladder. These tumors, histologically classified as leiomyosarcomas or fibrosarcomas (McKnight 1978), cause an approximately a 35% of population mortality (Paul et al. 2006).

The genomic structure of ASSBSV is 10.9 Kb in length, including LTRs of 713 pb of sequence at each end of the proviral genome (Paul et al. 2006). The internal region of this retrovirus displays a Primer Binding Site (PBS), three Open Reading Frames (ORFs) for gag, pol (PR, RT, RNaseH, INT) and env genes characteristic of retroviruses, as well as a Polypurine Tract (PPT) adjacent to the 3´LTR (Paul et al. 2006).
