Koala is one of the several transposable elements described in the genome of the rice species Oryza australiensis (Piegu et al. 2006). This LTR retrotransposon belongs to Retrofit clade within the Branch 2 of the Ty1/Copia family (Llorens et al. 2009). The genome of Koala is 4992 bp in size, including LTRs of 315 nts that flank a single Open Reading Frame ORF. This encodes for both gag and pol polyproteins domains characteristic of Ty1/Copia LTR retrotransposons (Piegu et al. 2006).
